Process engineering, from concept to realisation

Process-engineering project development and consulting for industry.

Overview

Our Process Engineering practice delivers the full development of your industrial facility: from the base design (Process Flow Diagrams – PFD) through to detailed engineering (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams – P&ID), covering mass and energy balances and equipment sizing.

Our methodology is designed from the ground up to ensure a high degree of interoperability. The intrinsic articulation with Fire Safety (in the assessment and management of ATEX atmospheres) and the technical transposition of equipment into an open ecosystem flow through a continuous information stream, minimising coordination entropy. The outcome is the delivery of more than an optimised process: a structured digital asset capable of meeting the most demanding operational requirements.

Scope and Boundaries of Engagement

We anchor our practice in technical rigour and a commitment to transparency. To safeguard the alignment of expectations and excellence in delivery, we clarify our boundaries of engagement:

  • Project Focus and Exclusivity: We favour quality over volume. We concentrate our engineering resources on the development of a single detailed-design project capable of meeting expectations, ensuring an unmatched commitment aligned with the agreed terms.
  • Supervision and Commissioning: Our practice focuses on consulting and project development. Site supervision, monitoring and commissioning of installations are not part of our base engagement scope; they can, however, be provided subject to specific assessment and contracting.

Capabilities and Deliverables

  • Base and Detailed Engineering — development and review of Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID).
  • Mass and Energy Balances — process simulation and assessment of existing installations.
  • Equipment Sizing — calculation, specification and technical selection of process equipment (reactors, heat exchangers, separators, pumping and piping networks).
  • Industrial Layout Design — layout studies focused on optimising process flow, operability, safety and ease of maintenance.
  • ATEX Assessment and Management — zone classification, equipment selection and preparation of the Explosion Protection Manual, in close articulation with the SCIE practice whenever applicable.
  • Industrial Effluent and Water Treatment — pre-project, technical sizing and optimisation of treatment and recirculation operations.
  • Energy Efficiency Audits — operational diagnostics and preparation of mitigation action plans for the industrial sector.
  • Process Maps (BPMN) — application of the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) discipline to structuring the value chain and coordination.

Regulatory and Standards Framework

Our technical development is governed by compliance with European directives and the national legislation applicable to industry:

  • Explosive Atmospheres (ATEX) — Directive 2014/34/EU (equipment) and Directive 1999/92/EC (workplaces), safeguarding the protection and delimitation of zones across industrial premises.
  • Sustainability and Emissions — DL no. 152-D/2017 (industrial emissions and air quality) and DL no. 226-A/2007 (use of water resources).
  • Sector Standards of Excellence — compliance with the references covering the relevant technical requirements, such as HACCP/ISO 22000 (Food Sector), GMP/ISO 14644 (Pharmaceutical Industry/Cleanrooms) and REACH regulation (Chemical Industry).
  • Energy Management — ISO 50001 guidelines as applied to energy efficiency and sustainability audits.

Sectors of Activity

  • Food and Beverage Industry — processing units, processing lines and dairy installations.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry — controlled-environment production areas (GMP) and fluid networks (utilities).
  • Chemical Industry — processing and treatment units.
  • Environment and Sustainability — treatment plants for process water and industrial wastewater.

Our Methodology

  1. 1. Operational Assessment and Diagnosis

Rigorous survey of the current process, analysis of the existing data set and structuring of the project in line with strategic and technical objectives.

  2. 2. Conceptual and Basic Engineering

Structured development of the process basis (PFD and P&ID), preparation of balances, preliminary ATEX zone classification and pre-sizing of equipment.

  3. 3. Detailed Engineering and Integration

Final definition and specification of equipment, consolidation and integration with the remaining disciplines.

  4. 4. Handover and Technical Support

Delivery of the final project documentation and provision of specialist technical support, in strict alignment with the established engagement scope.
